Make it easy for the customer to take action

Before you begin the web design process, decide on some clear goals for your website. Think about who your audience is and what you want them to do when using your website. Is the site to provide them with extra information about your goods and services? Do you want customers to buy through your site? Do you want to them to sign up to your newsletter?

Once you’ve decided what you want the user to do, make it easy for them to do it. Adding clear calls-to-action can encourage users to take the action you want.

A button with a simple message is enough to move a customer on to the next stage of their journey. Effective calls-to-action should be simple, such as:

  • Add to cart
  • Sign up now!
  • Get a quote
  • Contact Us

Use data to improve your performance

Knowing how many visitors you’re getting, what your users are doing on your site and how they found you can help you to improve the user experience of your website.

Luckily, there are a number of free tools available to help you track this data. Google Analytics is a hive of information about your site users.

Using this free tool you can quickly see how many people visited your page during a given period, what pages they viewed, what device they used and what actions they took. Comparing data over time, you can see how your user numbers have grown and use the data to influence changes to your pages.

Another free Google tool is Google Search Console. Formerly Google Webmaster Tools, Search Console allows you to see what keyword searches led to your site being found on Google. By showing the number of impressions and number of clicks, you can see how discoverable your website is for your key search terms.

Using these free tools is an easy way to ensure your website is working to its maximum.

Perfect a tone of voice

Your website should be a reflection of your brand. It should represent who you are as a company and be instantly recognisable as you to your customers. To do this it is vitally important that your site follows your brand guidelines. That is both in terms of colours, logos and fonts, as well as tone of voice.

Often your website will contain similar information to a competitor. One of the best ways of making your site stand out is through the language you use. Think how you speak to your customers on the phone or in your store. This will be unique to you and your business and should be reflected throughout your website.

If you use a formal style when talking face-to-face, use this on your website. If you employ a chattier style utilise this in your product descriptions. Customers will instantly be able to relate to this style that they’re familiar with and will be comfortable making purchasing decisions based on this.

Optimise your pages for search engines

The world of search engine optimisation, or SEO, is a complex one. There are a number of factors which search engines, such as Google, use to determine where your page ranks.

There are, however, some basic steps you can easily employ on your site.

  • Write clear page titles and display them using an H1 tag so search engines know this is the most important element. Then use H2, H3 and H4 tags for lower subheadings.
  • Add an alt tag to your images to describe to a search engine, and users, what the image is of.
  • Add a meta description to be displayed in search engine results pages (SERPs).
  • Write a regular blog with relevant content including the keywords people are searching for.

Ensure your contact details are prominent

Alongside good calls-to-action, one of the easiest ways to convert users into customers is by prominently displaying your contact info.

Having your contact number and email address at the top of every page makes it easy for users to start a conversation with you.

Make sure you look good on mobile

gusto prono

On average, over 40% of visits to a website are on a mobile device. So making sure your site displays properly on these devices is a necessity. Responsive web pages will resize depending on the screen size they are displayed on. This means they are as easy to read on a smartphone as they are on a large desktop computer screen.

If your website does not display well on mobile devices, you need to update your site. It’s as simple as that.

Update the website design

Website design is continually evolving. Like fashion, web trends change and an outdated site will look just that. Not only will this put off site visitors, but it will also not rank as well in search engine results and may be at threat from hackers. Updating or refreshing your site every 3-5 years is a necessity to ensure it remains current.
